The purpose of the exhibition is to focus both the tourists' and inhabitants' attention on political and social mechanisms that cause the irreversible process of Krakow's gentrification. The placement of the project isn't coincidental - Smolensk Street 22/8 is the address where Justyna Koeke and Cecylia Malik, sisters and curators of the project have been living with their families for 30 years. The new owner of the property forced all the tenants to leave. The apartment, days before the families leave the building, will become an open art workshop for artists from Poland and Germany. The project includes workshop for Krakow's art students, meetings with artists participating in the exhibition, live music shows and a lecture by Imke Hansen - a political science major at Hamburg University.<br />The purpose of the exhibition is to focus both the tourists' and inhabitants' attention on political and social mechanisms that cause the irreversible process of Krakow's gentrification, as well as to include the artists in the social discourse about depopulation of European cities' downtowns. The project includes both Polish and German artists with their disparate viewpoints. The process is well realized and in effect in Germany for years, but in Poland it’s relatively new and rapid. The viewpoint of artists coming from a family that’s been forced to move will be emotional and personal. The German artists, on the other hand, will try to comment on the topic in a distanced way, as observers who aren’t actively involved. Both groups will work at the eponymous Smolensk Street 22/8, and the apartment is to be vacated at the end of March 2010. Every piece of work exhibited will be created especially for this project and will function in context of the issue. The apartment will become an open workshop. The exhibition will deal with various art forms: music, video art, photography and performance. Smolensk Street 22/8 will be inaugurated with a lecture by Imke Hansen, a political science major from Hamburg University. The lecture will deal with the gentrification problem. Smolensk Street 22/8 Project is both an exhibition in progress and an artistic event. The German artists will create a housing space in one of the rooms, where they will live for the duration of the project. That way the project will discourse with the history of this spot, where everyone in the household used to live and create. Life and art coexisted and there was no border between. The Polish artists, on the other hand, either belong to the Malik family or know it well as friends and visitors. s. The new owner of the property forced all the tenants to leave. The purpose of the exhibition is to focus both the tourists' and inhabitants' attention on political and social mechanisms that cause the irreversible process of Krakow's gentrification. The placement of the project isn't coincidental - Smolensk Street 22/8 is the address where Justyna Koeke and Cecylia Malik, sisters and curators of the project have been living with their families for 30 years. The new owner of the property forced all the tenants to leave. The apartment, days before the families leave the building, will become an open art workshop for artists from Poland and Germany. The project includes workshop for Krakow's art students, meetings with artists participating in the exhibition, live music shows and a lecture by Imke Hansen - a political science major at Hamburg University.<br /> The purpose of the exhibition is to focus both the tourists' and inhabitants' attention on political and social mechanisms that cause the irreversible process of Krakow's gentrification, as well as to include the artists in the social discourse about depopulation of European cities' downtowns. The project includes both Polish and German artists with their disparate viewpoints. The process is well realized and in effect in Germany for years, but in Poland it’s relatively new and rapid. The viewpoint of artists coming from a family that’s been forced to move will be emotional and personal. The German artists, on the other hand, will try to comment on the topic in a distanced way, as observers who aren’t actively involved. Both groups will work at the eponymous Smolensk Street 22/8, and the apartment is to be vacated at the end of March 2010. Every piece of work exhibited will be created especially for this project and will function in context of the issue. The apartment will become an open workshop. The exhibition will deal with various art forms: music, video art, photography and performance. Smolensk Street 22/8 will be inaugurated with a lecture by Imke Hansen, a political science major from Hamburg University. The lecture will deal with the gentrification problem. Smolensk Street 22/8 Project is both an exhibition in progress and an artistic event. The German artists will create a housing space in one of the rooms, where they will live for the duration of the project. That way the project will discourse with the history of this spot, where everyone in the household used to live and create. Life and art coexisted and there was no border between. The Polish artists, on the other hand, either belong to the Malik family or know it well as friends and visitors. s. The new owner of the property forced all the tenants to leave. W porównaniu z pięknym dworem i 120 hektarami lasu w Stryszowie, 132 metry kwadratowe były jedynie małym substytutem niedawnych przestrzeni. Przestrzeń dodatkowo zmniejszyła się, gdy po II wojnie światowej władze domeldowały dwie rodziny, również wyrzucone ze swoich majątków.<br />Z czasem dodatkowi lokatorzy przeprowadzili się do innych mieszkań a rodzina Skrochowskich na dobre zadomowiła się na ulicy Smoleńsk. W latach osiemdziesiątych do mieszkania wprowadziła się wnuczka Marii Skrochowskiej, tym samym rezygnując z przydziału na mieszkanie w nowo wybudowanym bloku. Od tego momentu aż po dzień dzisiejszy pod adresem Ulica Smoleńsk 22/8 mieszkała rodzina Anny i Jana Malików.<br />Przez ten czas codzienne życie i twórczość mieszkańców mieszkania była ze sobą ściśle związane. Nieremontowane mieszkanie z biegiem lat coraz bardziej przypominało dzieło Kurta Schwitersa Merzbau. Ściany pokrywały coraz to nowe rzeźby i obrazy tworzone przez Jana, skrzypka Opery Krakowskiej, rzeźbiarza i kompozytora, Annę rzeźbiarkę oraz sześć córek artystek. 132 metry wypełniały dźwięki grających na różnych instrumentach córek. Mieszkanie było pracownią rzeźbiarską, malarską, szopkarska, stolarnią i salą prób.<br />Od lat dziewięćdziesiątych kamienica zaczęła zmieniać swoich właścicieli. W końcu dostała się w ręce hiszpańskiego inwestora, który postanowił przebudować całą kamienicę na hotel. Pod koniec 2009 roku ostatecznie zakończyła się walka rodziny Malików o mieszkanie. Sąd przyznał rację nowemu właścicielowi, który zażądał od mieszkańców płacenia czynszu, który trzykrotnie przewyższa państwową pensję skrzypka operowego. Pod koniec marca rozpoczęta w 1932 roku z nakazu sądu musi się zakończyć.<br />Tygodniowy projekt Ulica Smoleńsk 22/8 jest próbą opowiedzenia szerszej publiczności o historii niezwykłego miejsca, do którego każdy z jego mieszkańców mógł zawsze wrócić i gdzieś się zmieścić. To też opowieść o fragmencie polskiej historii pokazanej na przykładzie losów jednej rodziny. To również pytanie o koszty i konsekwencje polskiej transformacji oraz studium przypadku, na którym widać zmiany, jakie w ostatnich latach zachodzą w tkance miejskiej. Trzydzieści lat temu w okolicy ulicy Smoleńsk było kilka podstawówek, podwórka z trzepakami i małe warzywniaki. Dzisiaj są tam jedynie siedziby kilku banków i hotel. W ogólnym zarysie oznacza proces przekształcenia danego kwartału miasta (np. dzielnicy) z przestrzeni społecznej w obszar całkowicie skomercjalizowany i podlegający jedynie "rynkowej" kontroli. Proces gentryfikacji w Polsce jest nowy i bardzo gwałtowny.Celem projektu jest zwrócenie uwagi mieszkańców Krakowa, a także turystów na nieodwracalny proces gentryfikacji, któremu poddane jest miasto. Pokazanie jak polityka i sytuacja ekonomiczna wpływa na ciągły proces wyludniania się centrum miast. Do projektu zaproszeni zostali Artyści z Niemiec, gdyż proces gentryfikacji trwa tam zdecydowanie dłużej. Przewaga jego negatywnych skutków została zauważona przez spoczeczności lokalne i spotkała się z falą protestów mieszkańców miast takich jak Berlin - Friedrichshain, Kolonia – Ehrenfeld, Hamburg Wilhelmsburg- Reiherstiegsviertel, czy Magdeburg – Buckau. Włączenie artystów z Polski i Niemiec do dyskusji społecznej pozwoli na przedstwienie 2 punktów postrzegania tego problemu. Pierwszy, spojrzenie Artystów polskich związanych z Rodziną zmuszoną do przeprowadzki, to punkt widzenia osób związanych emocjonalnie z miejscem i znających problem często z własnego doświadczenia. Drugi punkt widzenia, Artystów Niemieckich będzie spojrzeniem bardziej zdystansowanym, spojrzeniem osób obserwujących problem z boku, jednak znających go zdecydowanie lepiej. Zarówno artyści Polscy, jak i Niemieccy będą pracować na miejscu, właśnie w opuszczonym mieszkaniu. Wszystkie prace pokazane podczas końcowej wystawy będą nowe, stworzone specjalnie dla tego miejsca. Będą funkcjonować w kontekście konkretnego miejsca i czasu. Mieszkanie stanie się otwartą pracownią, niektóre prace będą w procesie - dopuszczamy możliwość wykańczania projektów w trakcie trwania wystawy.
